AUSTIN (AP) - A University of Texas police officer who shot and killed a research animal in March was warned to stay in his car before firing 10 rounds and killing Tony the chimp, according to newly released documents.
In reports obtained by the Austin American-Statesman, UT police officer Paul Maslyk drove his personal car to the Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research when a 140-pound, 17½-year-old chimpanzee broke out in March.

The worst of Hurricane Dolly's wind and rainfall had dissipated Thursday morning as South Texas residents ventured onto city streets to inspect damage caused by the first major storm of the hurricane season, which began in June and ends in November.
On Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service downgraded the hurricane, which made landfall early Wednesday afternoon as a Category 2, to a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.

Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have discovered a quirk in the constantly-evolving HIV virus that they say will help them to develop an effective vaccine for the prevention of the virus in the next 10 years.
"It is a long road; the virus has been around for almost 25 years, vaccine efforts have failed again and again, but we think we have a unique solution to the problem," said Sudhir Paul, a UT medical school pathology professor who has worked to find an effective combatant to the HIV virus for the past 19 years.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - Dolly spun into a hurricane Tuesday, heading toward the U.S.-Mexico border and the heavily populated Rio Grande Valley, where officials feared heavy rains could cause massive flooding and levee breaks.
Dolly was upgraded from a tropical storm Tuesday afternoon, and sustained winds later reached about 80 mph.
